Free OzHarvest supermarket opens in Adelaide to help people experiencing food insecurity
A free supermarket has opened in Adelaide’s inner west to support people doing it tough while also reducing food waste.
OzHarvest’s new supermarket in Hindmash is the second in Australia, providing produce, pantry items or a cooked meal to people experiencing food insecurity.
Customers do not need any type of food voucher or concession card.

OzHarvest SA manager Rachel Hibble said more than 100 people turned up in just one day when the supermarket opened for a media preview last week.
The charity’s other supermarket in Waterloo, Sydney, services about 600 people daily.
“We’ve never seen the demand so high for our services,” Hibble said.
“We know almost half the Australian population is experiencing some sort of anxiety around food, not knowing where their next meal might come from.
“We’re just pleased to be able to make some difference and spread the love as much as we can.”
The OzHarvest supermarket will be supplied by registered donors including wholesalers, major supermarkets and other speciality stores across South Australia.
As well as helping people in need, it aims to reduce the annual 7.6 million tonnes of food waste across Australia.
“We talk through things such as dates and how the food has been kept to make sure it’s safe,” Hibble said.
“I encourage businesses if they have surplus food to contact our office.”
