Should you cut your neighbour’s grass?

This week, the question sparked wild debate after a photo of a partially mowed nature strip was posted to Reddit.

The photo showed two-thirds of a nature strip cut up to the property line. However, the neighbour’s portion of the strip was left uncut and overgrown.

Despite the image not being given much context, the Reddit user called the act “UnAustralian!”

On Thursday, the question divided Entrepreneurial & Small Business Women Australia CEO Amanda Rose and veteran journalist and former radio host Neil Mitchell as they tackled the issue on Sunrise.

Rose took aim at the need to mow the nature strip at all.

“I tell you what is unAustralian, the fact it’s council’s responsibility. It’s council land, and they’re forcing the homeowners to mow that piece of land,” Rose said.

“It’s up to you whether you want to do that or not (mow your neighbour’s side).

“But the fact that homeowners have to do it at all and then council can actually fine you, if you’re not looking after a piece of land that they own ...”

However, Mitchell said mowing your neighbour’s side of the strip was a good thing to do.

“If you get on with the neighbour ... I have done it for years, and they’ve done it for me for years. You can’t just handball it to the council,” Mitchell said.

Rose countered that council should “absolutely” be mowing nature strips — but Mitchell disagreed.

“It’s council’s land! Imagine the council coming to mow your back lawn,” Rose said.

Mitchell did concede it was council land.

“Absolutely, it’s council land — the home-owner does not own that land. That’s true,” Mitchell said.

“But let’s take responsibility for our own lives. Let’s show a bit of courtesy and decency and mow the neighbour’s lawn.”

But Rose was not convinced.

“It’s kinda why you pay rates — and rates are going up,” Rose said.
