More than 215,000 South Australian households have just over a month to claim a payment of up to $1100 to help with various expenses amid the rising cost of living.

Savings on energy, water, sewerage, medical heating and cooling, and the Emergency Services Levy are all available with the 2024-2025 Cost of Living Concession payment.

About a quarter of all SA households on low or fixed incomes will be able to apply for the payment, which was permanently doubled this year for renters and self-funded retirees.

The deadline to apply for the annual payment is December 31, but thousands of eligible households are still yet to apply, the SA Government said.

“Time is running out to apply,” it said.

“I encourage anyone who thinks they might be eligible to fill out an application or check online or call the Concessions SA hotline to find out more,” SA Minister for Human Services Nat Cook said.

The payment includes $255.60 for cost-of-living expenses, $274.85 for energy costs, up to $398.40 for water, $162 for sewerage costs, $274.85 for costs related to medical heating and cooling, and $46 for the Emergency Services Levy (fixed property).

Eligibility for the payment is based on circumstances of each household as of July 1, 2024.

“We know that many low or fixed-income households are doing it tough with the rising cost of living. This might be older South Australians, families, single parents or people with a disability,” Cook said.

“Our government has invested significantly in concessions to ensure those who need relief with the cost-of-living are able to access it.”

The SA government has also extended public transport concessions from January 1,2025 to all people with a Centrelink Health Care Card, and will continue to offer free 24/7 public transport for more than 400,000 Seniors Card members.

It will also double the materials and services charge subsidy from $100 to $200 for each child attending a government school from 2025

The Sports Voucher program will also provide families with two $100 grants from 2025 to help cover the cost of children participating in extracurricular activities.

New applicants can apply online at www.sa.gov.au/concessions or phone the Concessions SA hotline on 1800 307 758 to have an application posted.
