A motorcycle rider whose bike slammed into the back of a car on NSW’s north coast at the weekend has died in hospital.

The 65-year-old was airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital with critical injuries after colliding with the rear of an SUV in the tiny region of Kynnumboon on Sunday, police were told.

Authorities confirmed the worst — that the man had died in hospital — on Monday.

The crash involved a Ducati motorbike and Mitsubishi Outlander and unfolded on Numinbah Rd about 12.15pm on Sunday.

The male driver of the SUV, 72, and a female passenger, aged 74, were not injured in the crash.

The driver was taken to Murwillumbah Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

An investigation into what sparked the crash is now being handled by NSW Police, and people with information or footage of the incident have been asked to contact authorities.

The public has also been reminded not to report information via NSW Police’s social media pages.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
