Two people are in hospital after a car collided with a school bus east of Melbourne.

The crash occurred next to a railway level crossing at the intersection of Bank Street and Princes Highway in Traralgon about 3.50pm on Thursday.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said two people - including the 39-year-old driver of the car - were taken to Latrobe Regional Health with non-life-threatening injuries while 17 people were assessed at the scene.

The bus driver and about 20 high school students who were on their way home were mostly uninjured.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing,” Victoria Police said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
