“What a disgusting thing to happen to someone who was loved and respected by so many people, including myself.”

On Wednesday, Sunrise reporter Teegan Dolling said Abdulrahim had just returned from a trip overseas before the shooting.

“It’s been reported that Sam Abdulrahim had only just flown back in from overseas, actually from Asia, on Monday, and within 24 hours he was dead,” Dolling said.

“Somehow, his enemies knew he had to check into that hotel ... and they knew where to find him. That’s a big part of this investigation.

“We know that his family, his friends, they were telling him to stay overseas but it was yesterday as he was walking through the underground car park with his girlfriend that he was ... assassinated.

“The police themselves were also telling the 32-year-old former Mongol to watch his back.

“There have been a number of botched attempts on his life. There was the one in Faulkner in 2022, when he was shot eight times, and another in May last year (when) 17 shots were fired at him at his Thomastown home,” Dolling said.

“We know all of the gyms (where) he’d been practising his boxing ...

“There were reports he was trying to muscle in on the illegal tobacco trade as well. (he had) a very long list of enemies.

“His sister has put out a warning to the person who is at the top of his enemy list, that is, the very well-known crime figure Kazem Hamad, who is currently overseas.

“His sister put out on social media, ‘Kaz-Dog, it never ends here.’

“The fear (is) that we could see revenge attacks and that the public could get caught up in this gangland murder.”

Police said the incident was targeted. The Homicide Squad is now leading the investigation.

“We’re still piecing it all together. It appears at this stage that the male was walking towards his car and the offender has approached and a number of shots were fired,” Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said on Tuesday.

Abdulrahim was with a woman, believed to be his girlfriend, when he was gunned down.

Thomas said she “is obviously extremely distraught and upset” but was physically unharmed.

“This is something that will live with her for a long time,” Thomas said.

“She did her best to render first aid to the male.”

Police assisted in providing first aid and CPR to the underworld figure before an ambulance arrived soon after.

“Unfortunately, the male passed away from the gunshot injuries he had received,” Thomas said.

Police are working to narrow down who was involved, the gun that was used and how many shots were fired.

“We’ve got crime scene examiners that are present at the moment examining the scene so it will be some time before we know how many (shots were fired) but I can say a number of shots were fired,” Thomas said.

He added it was “fair to say” they are looking for “more than one” suspect.

A white Porsche SUV that fled the scene after the shooting was found burnt out in nearby Reservoir.

The offenders had already left the area by the time police arrived.

According to media reports, there was a $1 million contract out on Abdulrahim’s life.

“We are aware that there has been a number of incidents in the past where threats have been made to this particular male and on each occasion safety warnings have been provided to him by Victoria Police,” Thomas said.
