The detective senior constable was injured as he approached the 4WD and “the driver accelerated away”, police allege.

The family’s “Superman” suffered 15 broken ribs, a broken arm and fractured ankle.

“When we first found out, we didn’t think it was as serious as it was until we got to the hospital. He was getting blood transfusions, and it was touch and go there Friday night,” McDougall’s twin brother Chris McDougall said.

“That was our biggest concern ... getting through the night, and Saturday, once they got him stabilised, he seemed to get a lot better.”

McDougall said his brother is “just so strong”.

“Every time we saw him, he always gave us the thumbs up. He’s so tough, and he’s Superman to most of the family, he really is, the things he’s been through,” he said.

“We’re so grateful he is here with us.”

The injured officer underwent surgery in Royal Perth Hospital on Sunday and is in a serious but stable condition in intensive care, with his family by his side .

He is “going really well”, all thing considered, but faces months of rehabilitation.

His family has thanked first responders, ICU staff, WA Police and everyone who has sent supportive messages.

“He has a long journey ahead... but he’s got the support of the family, immediate family, and the blue family - the support they’ve given us is second to none,” McDougall said on Monday.

“Even the messages through from all the friends and family to us, we tell Greg and he’s chuffed, but it’s going to be a long road going forward.”

Despite the ordeal of the last few days, the bed-ridden officer still has his sights set on attending a family trip overseas.

“He’s got Bali booked in December to go away with his girls which he was really looking forward to. He’s always asking about it. He’s got a positive mindset. That’s his goal at the moment - Bali in December,” his brother said.

McDougall’s brother-in-law Fabian Dawson spoke on Sunday, describing the officer as “a tough bloody guy”

“It has been very devastating for the family members and extended family members and friends,” Dawson said.

WA Police Union President Paul Gale said the incident had stunned members who are still “raw” over the death of constable Anthony Woods, who was killed on the job in June, 2023.

McDougall received medical assistance at the scene, near the intersection of Stanton Rd and Epsom Ave, before he was rushed to hospital on Friday afternoon.

The driver allegedly sped off but crashed a short time later in Bellevue. Police claim the driver then fled on foot before being arrested.

A 37-year-old Stoneville man was charged with aggravated dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, failing to report and incident, failing to to stop and ensure assistance and reckless driving.

Police allege one kilogram of meth was uncovered in the HiLux and have since raided properties in Ascot, Woodbridge and Stoneville.

Authorities say more drugs were uncovered during the searches.
