The eight-year-old suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain and had to have emergency surgery before being flown back to Perth on Friday.

A week on from the accident that left his future uncertain, loved ones say he is making “pretty incredible progress”.

Doctors woke the young athlete from an induced coma this week and he has been taken off a ventilator.

He is even communicating with hand signals, “the coolest being a thumbs-up”.

“He struggles to talk due to all of the trauma of the various ventilators and tubes being put down his throat but he has asked what happened and (his parents) have told him,” family friend BJ Ariasa said in an update on GoFundMe on Wednesday.

“He’s been asked who’s in his team photo and he can name them.”

Ariasa said Joshy remembers being visited in hospital in Bali, proving “how important it is to talk to coma patients regardless of what stage they are in their journey”.

“Joshy has a very long road to recovery but he is a fighter. He knows his mates are waiting for him on the pitch when he’s ready in his own time,” Ariasa said.

The young boy remains in Perth’s Children’s Hospital.

Joshy was in Bali for a futsal tournament where he was set to play alongside teammates from the Cockburn Wolves last weekend.

An online fundraiser set up to support the young futsal player’s family with medical costs has now reached $125,000.

Loved ones say the family had insurance but their cover did not provide a safety net in situations like the quad bike emergency.
