Tragic update for Perth man swept out to sea while saving swimmer in trouble

The family of Perth man Craig Laidley say they are “in shock and devastated” over the death of the 56-year-old Good Samaritan in Bali.

Laidley had jumped into the water to save a fellow tourist on Wednesday but was swept out to sea as they reached the safety of rocks.

“It is no surprise to us that he put his life on the line to help another in need,” loved ones said in a statement.

“His bravery and determination are a testament to his character.

“A man who brought kindness, strength, light and laughter to those around him.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to every person who has offered their assistance during this tragic event.”

The family thanked police, search and rescue teams and the “countless locals and tourists” who “pitched in their time, efforts and care to help”.

“We hope Craig’s heroic spirit inspires others to act with courage, selflessness and offer a helping hand to those in need,” the family said.

“Craig leaves behind two sons and an extended family who will love and miss him dearly.

“Bali was a place of celebration and healing for Craig. May he rest in peace.”

Laidley was walking along Balian Beach — a few hours northwest of Kuta on the holiday island’s west coast — about 4.15pm on Wednesday when he heard German man Micro Stalla, 29, calling out for help.

Laidley rushed into the water to save a fellow tourist.

The pair reached some rocks, but witnesses say just as Stalla was pulled to safety a wave took Laidley, and he was swept back out to sea.

A massive rescue operation was launched and his two brothers, Bruce and Glenn, arrived in Bali overnight to join the search.

Laidley’s body was found on the beach on Friday morning by searchers.

Family in Perth told 7NEWS they were glad his brothers were there to bring him home.
