Community Guidelines

1. Agreement

If you do not agree to act in accordance with these guidelines, you must not post comments on social media channels, pages or sites owned or controlled by West Australian Newspapers Limited (WAN) including our online publications that allow comments such as online sites (Social Media Sites).

By using or participating in WAN Social Media Sites you agree to be bound by these guidelines.

These guidelines may be updated from time to time, by participating in WAN social media following any revisions you agree to the updated guidelines.

2. Use of WAN Social Media Sites

WAN is a multi-platform media company and uses social media and sites to communicate with our audience. We value your comments and opinions, but any posts made on our Social Media Sites must be relevant, respectful and not intended to offend others in the online community.

When participating in WAN’s Social Media Sites, including posting, commenting and sharing you must not post content or links to content that:

  • is unlawful, or may defame, discriminate, offend, interfere with privacy or infringe copyright or other intellectual property;
  • vilifies or discriminates against any gender, religion, race/ethnicity, age, sexual preference, criminal record, disability, marital or domestic status or political opinion;
  • contains deceptive, misleading or fraudulent information, including impersonating or falsely represent any other person, organisation or company;
  • contains swearing, or abusive language;
  • is threatening, harassing or abusive (including flaming and trolling);
  • consists of personal attacks against other users, members of the public, WAN or its employees;
  • includes personal information relating to yourself or others (including names, email address, phone numbers or photographs);
  • includes offers (including reposting other’s offers) that could be considered spam; or
  • contains computer viruses, codes or files that could be harmful to WAN’s systems or equipment.

3. Monitoring and Moderation

WAN monitors and modifies its Social Media Sites. If WAN identifies posts that contravene the terms set out in section 2 of these guidelines WAN may hide the post, turn off the comments function and/or block repeat offenders from its Social Media Sites.

4. Disclaimer

WAN accepts no responsibility, or liability for any loss, damage, cost or expense, which you or another party directly or indirectly suffers arising from or in connection with, your use of or reliance on any posts, comments or any other information made available or accessible through our Social Media Sites or any linked site.

To the extent permitted by law, WAN accepts no liability from its moderation or removal, or failure to moderate or remove, any post, comment or other material (including inappropriate content) from its Social Media Sites.

WAN does not endorse or otherwise support any views, opinions or comments posted on our Social Media Sites or any content, sources or accounts that it acknowledges, follows, links, reposts or shared on our Social Media Sites.

5. Licence for user generated content

By posting comments or other content on WAN Social Media Sites you:

  • grant WAN a royalty free, non-exclusive, transferable, sublicensable, irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide licence to use this content for any purpose;
  • freely and irrevocably consent to all alterations (material or otherwise) to that content and agree that you do not require any right of attribution; and
  • agree we may use your username and content to promote the WAN Social Media Sites including the comments section.
