It holds a prime position overlooking Sydney Harbour, but inside the $80 million Crown Penthouse, that has just changed hands is equally as stunning.

Industry sources said the pinnacle property in Sydney's Barangaroo area of the CBD sold this week for around $80 million.

That puts it above the price paid by former Crown Chairman James Packer who paid $72million off-the-plan in 2017 for the two-level sub-penthouse in the same building on levels 65 and 66.

Listing agents, The Agency's head of project Steven Chen and Colliers director of residential project marketing Luke Hayes, were unable to comment on the sale.

But what do you get for that amount of money?

The level of luxury, hotel facilities and high-level of security on offer are understood to be some of the key drawcards for those cashed up enough to consider it as a home.

While any luxury home may have back-to-base alarm systems and property-perimeter cameras, the security at the Crown apartments are next level.

The combination of security technology, including eye-retina detection cameras, and on-site security staff have been big drawcards for high net worth individuals who have bought in the building, which also includes a high rollers casino and luxury hotel.

Five-star living

Having the services of a five-star hotel at your fingertips also takes the penthouse to another level.

The owners receive priority bookings for the array of restaurants in the Crown complex, including the much sought-after Oncore by Clare Smyth.

But if you don't want to travel a few floors to that destination, the services of chefs at all restaurants at Crown are able to be hired to cook for you at home.

In the penthouse, there are two kitchens to undertake such tasks.

A front-of-house kitchen that is visible to guests.

A second kitchen is concealed and the place where preparation takes place by either external chefs or your own staff.

Such staff can also be housed within their own quarters in the apartment.

They make up just part of the six bedrooms and eight bathrooms on offer in the penthouse.

The master suite, or more appropriately master wing, is the most impressive of those sleeping areas.

Yes it comes with stunning views on offer throughout the apartment, that takes up the full 81st and 82nd floor.

But it also features its own balcony with a huge spa tub, custom built walk-in wardrobe - along with its own private bar.

The main living area is a stunning centrepiece, with soaring ceilings, modern parquet-style floors and wrap-around views from 6m walls of towering glass.

For cool winter evenings, there is an open fireplace in this main entertaining area.

When guests arrive, there is the option to select a drink from the featured wine wall with room for 3000 bottles.

When you tire of looking out at the killer views, a luxury home cinema awaits.

Along with the restaurant facilities other adjoining luxury hotel services of offer include daily housekeeping and even a bed turndown service.

While the property comes in at a premium, it takes out just the second-highest price for an apartment in the country.

That title goes to the $140 million sale in the neighbouring building, Lendlease's One Sydney Harbour.

In 2019, that price was paid for an apartment that was an amalgamation of two apartments over three floors in the building.
