'Lovely starter home' at Warrawong attracts dozens of bids at auction

A Wollongong home has been hotly contested at auction, attracting dozens of bids.

The Warrawong home was sold as part of a recent Ray White auction night, whereby another property changed hands after an extended period on the market.

The three-bedroom plus study, single-level brick and tile home sits on 677sqm

“Positioned in a peaceful residential street just moments from schools, local shopping, and direct transport links to Wollongong CBD, this is a rare chance to secure a property brimming with potential in a thriving coastal enclave,” the property’s marketing states.

The Warrawong home attracted three registered bidders, all of whom took part in the proceedings.

The opening bid was $700,000, and 39 bids in total were placed.

Selling agent, Amanda Bonnici from Ray White Shellharbour City said the successful buyers were from Warrawong, with the property being popular as “it was renovated and a lovely starter home”.

According to CoreLogic,currently the median sales price of houses in Warrawong is $785,000.

According to CoreLogic’s preliminary figures for the week ending May 11, in the Illawarra there was a clearance rate of 54.6 per cent across 22 auctions.

Meanwhile, a home in one of Shellharbour’s most exclusive coastal pockets was also sold under the hammer.

The property, located at 3 Towns Street, Shellharbour changed hands for $2.8m.

The two-storey, five-bedroom home sits on 552sqm.

Only two bids were placed before the listing was sold.

Selling agent, Ms Bonnici said the home was sold to an Illawarra buyer, who liked the views and location.

CoreLogic records show the home was listed for sale in August 2024.

Features include two oversized terraces; a private rumpus room flowing through glass sliders to a landscaped, fully-fenced backyard; and hardwood flooring and clerestory windows.

Also, a five-minute inspection was all that was required to convince a buyer to battle it out for a Warilla home.

The home at 7 Anne Street, Warilla sold for $1.235m at the Ray White auction night.

Elsewhere in the region, a Shoalhaven property featuring a home in need of some TLC and a large block was snapped up at auction.

The property, located at 50 Meroo Road, Bomaderry was sold for $650,000.

The three-bedroom home contains high ceilings, original floorboards and vintage features on a 1297 square metre block.

The selling agent, Peter Russell from Integrity Real Estate said there was “spirited bidding”, with four registered bidders and three active bidders.

Mr Russell said the successful buyer was from Sydney, who had “a long-term strategy of investment, and maybe re-development”.

“It’s a fairly rundown home, but it’s a good spot and a big block,” he said.

Also, a Gerringong property without any bedrooms has drawn more than a dozen bidders at auction.

The property, which was being sold by the Uniting Church, changed hands for $1.2m.
