Sydney’s historic Putney Wharf to transform with waterfront homes, marina, and dining hub
A derelict heritage site along the Parramatta River in Sydney’s north is on the cusp of a big transformation, with dozens of new waterfront homes and marina berths, as well as shops and eateries slated for the area.
Putney Wharf Residences will offer 67 waterfront residences in a mix of three-storey townhouses and apartments, as well as 36 marina berths in what is described as a landmark development.
The precinct will also include retail, dining, and public space.

“It’s 1.6 ha of land, it has a 300m frontage to the harbour — it’s exceptional.”
The design was discussed 15 years ago, but only recently was the development approved.
The site is currently home to the historic Halvorsen Boatshed off Waterview St, 14 km from the CBD.
“In the Second World War, they actually developed Halvorsen’s for the Australian Navy, and it was also used for ammunition manufacturing here,” Abadeen Group managing director Justin Brown said.
“I think the beauty of this is retaining the fabric that’s obviously been here for well over 100 years.”
Heritage consultants have been involved in the project, and once construction begins, pieces of timber will be pulled apart, refurbished, and reconstructed.
“The care and the intricacy are so important —it’s not like building something from scratch,” Brown said.
The project has been partly inspired by Woolloomooloo and Walsh Bay.
“The vitality of those developments and the retained heritage factor has been an inspiration for us,”Brown said.
Properties start from more than $2 million for two-bedroom apartments, more than $3 million for three-bedroom apartments, and more than $4 million for a three-bedroom terrace.
“We’ve had over 3000 inquiries. A lot of local inquiries, actually—many local people from the Putney area,” says Tim Rees.
Prospective homebuyers will also have first pick of the 36 marina berths.
