Auction volumes are picking up pace after the holiday lull, with 1399 homes going under the hammer last week-a significant jump from 429 the previous week.

However, volumes remain lower than the same time last year when 1712 auctions were held, according to CoreLogic.

“The auction market is gradually shaking off the festive slowdown,” said CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless.

“Clearance rates remain relatively steady, with a preliminary capital city average of 65.0 per cent this week, compared to 64.5 per cent last week.”

Melbourne and Sydney led the way in auction numbers, with both cities posting solid clearance rates. In Melbourne, 479 homes went to auction, with a preliminary clearance rate of 65.4 per cent. Meanwhile, Sydney hosted 461 auctions, recording a stronger early clearance rate of 67.5 per cent, up from the previous week’s 59.5 per cent.

Among the smaller capitals, Brisbane saw 161 auctions with a clearance rate of 58.7 per cent, while Adelaide and Canberra recorded 156 and 131 auctions, with clearance rates of 61.7 per cent and 68.7 per cent, respectively.

As auction activity heats up, Tim Lawless expects momentum to build. “Historically, we see peak activity just before Easter, so we anticipate higher auction numbers in the coming weeks,” he said.
