MP hasn't touched a drop since infamous drunken video.

Barnaby Joyce has shed 15kg after giving up the booze following an incident earlier this year when he was filmed drunk and sprawled across a Canberra footpath.

The Nationals MP later said he had fallen from a planter box and blamed a mix of prescription drugs and alcohol for the incident on a street in the suburb of Braddon in the nation’s capital in February.

Footage of the incident went viral prompting Joyce to give up drinking.

He and his wife, Vikki Campion stopped storing alcohol at their home and Joyce has also started running and playing touch football.

On Monday, Joyce joined Tanya Plibersek and Nat Barr on Sunrise, where he spoke about his transformation.

“(It’s) my choice, nobody else’s. (After the incident) I thought ‘that’s a disgrace, can’t do that again’. I literally woke up the next morning and said, ‘that’ll do’. I’ve given up smokes and the alcohol.

Joyce joked he now has to “speak to people at functions” — but admitted he was feeling sharper, and he had improved his overall health following the decision.

“I haven’t had a drink. I’ve lost weight, I’m sharper,” Joyce said.

“(However) I’m not a wowser. If you want to have a drink, that is your choice. I’ve made a choice. Whether it’s for life or for as long as it goes, I don’t know.”

Plibersek went on to congratulate Joyce on the change.

“Cutting out alcohol is great for your health, for your family. I think it’s something to be congratulated. Good on you.”

Joyce recently spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald about his decision.

“Big swathes of the night I don’t remember. And that’s never, ever happened to me before. And I never, ever want it to happen again,” Joyce told the publication.

Joyce was also contrite when he spoke about the incident on Sunrise in February.

“Look, obviously, I made a big mistake — there’s no excuse for it,” Barnaby said.

“There is a reason, and it was a very eventful walk home, wasn’t it. I’m on a prescription drug, and they say certain things may happen to you if you drink, and they were absolutely 100 per cent right.

“I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m not looking for an excuse. I came back, I sat on a planter box, I fell off and I was videotaped. There you go. What else can you say?”

Federal Opposition leader Peter Dutton defended Joyce at the time, noting the person taking the video had not checked up on him while he was on the footpath.

“It’s pretty rough when people are walking past somebody who might need support,” he told Sky News.
