What my DNA test told me (that I wasn’t ready to hear)

So, it turns out a DNA test can do more than just trace your family tree.

It can also tell you that you’re genetically more likely to go bald, get eaten alive by mosquitoes, and struggle to keep a beat on the dance floor.

That is, if you’re me.

I took the AncestryDNA® + Traits test, and while it promised insights into my genetic makeup, what I got felt more like a personality roast.

But it was also surprisingly insightful.

This isn’t just about where you’re from, it’s about what makes you, you!

The test goes beyond ancestry, diving into more than 40 genetic traits to uncover things like how much caffeine you’re likely to crave, whether coriander tastes like soap to you, and even how you respond to sleep, exercise, and stress.

Think of it as a user manual for your body, one that might explain why you’re more likely to be a leader, I failed that one too!

We tried it on the Sunrise hosts

To see how accurate the test really is, we ran it past Sunrise hosts Shirvo and Nat and the results were a classic example of the whole nature vs. nurture debate.

The biggest shock? Shirvo is genetically more likely to be an endurance runner.

Perhaps less surprising, he drinks more coffee than most (thanks to that Irish heritage), has flat feet, and can certainly bust a move on the dance floor.

Nat, on the other hand, is more likely to get hangry, finds choreography easy (we’ll let her claim that one), has a musical ear — she did play the piano — and isn’t big on setting goals.

Some results felt eerily accurate, others a random guess, but that’s the point.

This isn’t about hard truths. It’s about probability and potential.

These reports show your biological starting blocks, not where you’ll finish.

How it works

The test is part of AncestryDNA’s Traits feature.

You simply provide a saliva sample and send it off.

Using one of the world’s largest genomics databases, the lab analyses your DNA and reveals patterns linked to over 40 personal traits.

Results typically arrive in 6 to 8 weeks, with an optional subscription to dive even deeper into your family’s history.

What’s the point?

While no test can predict who you’ll become, this one might help you better understand how you’re wired, and maybe even help make sense of some everyday quirks.
