Cam Rayner kicked two consecutive goals from controversial free kicks within seconds.

Brisbane Lions forward Cam Rayner has been gifted two goals in extraordinary circumstances at the MCG, with controversial free-kick decisions sparking scenes rarely witnessed at the home of football.

The drama unfolded when a free kick was awarded to Brisbane downfield, with the decision going against Mark O’Connor in what appeared to be approximately 150 metres off the ball.

Rayner, who had been having a quiet night up until that point, capitalised on the opportunity to insert himself into the contest and slotted the first goal.

Within moments, another free kick was awarded to Brisbane, allowing Rayner to kick his second goal in quick succession.

The rapid-fire goals sparked cheers and anger from the crowd, with commentators describing the scenes as extraordinary for such a huge occasion at the MCG.

“That is not a free kick,” one commentator said of the controversial decisions. “That is two goals in a minute for Brisbane.”

“Some of the most ridiculous umpiring you’ll ever see in a final.”

“There was nothing there,” Alastair Lynch says.

“I think it’s over-the-top officiating.”

The incident has added another chapter to finals series controversy, with the Lions benefiting from what many observers considered questionable umpiring decisions.

“Disgraceful,” says Nathan Buckley on Fox’s half-time show.

“I’m not a Cats supporter, but I was angry. That was ridiculous. It is a final. That is so soft.”

The goals came at a crucial time in the match, with Brisbane capitalising on the momentum shift to build pressure on their opponents.
