AFL grand final weather forecast: Here’s how it is shaping up in your city

Tens of thousands of Australian football fans will descend on the MCG to watch the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions face off in the AFL decider on Saturday.

Those people not lucky enough to score tickets to the match are instead gearing up to pack out beer gardens, pubs and friends’ houses to catch the showdown.

And while punters in Melbourne are in for a weather treat, the forecast appears less promising elsewhere across the country.

Wet weather which has lashed northwestern parts of Australia since the start of the week is now tracking across the southeast before hitting the eastern states from Thursday.

Here’s how the weather is shaping up across the country for grand final day.

Melbourne

A perfect sunny day is on the cards, with a chance of morning fog.

The morning will start off chilly with a low of 8C about 4am before reaching 21C by 2.30pm.

Conditions will cool throughout the evening, dropping to 15C by 10pm.

Winds northerly 20km/h to 30km/h.

Sydney

Ahead of Saturday’s game, the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting widespread rainfall of 40mm to 60mm, with isolated falls of up to 80mm, in some parts of NSW as wet conditions intensify throughout Thursday and Friday.

Most of the heavy rain will ease come Saturday, when a high chance of showers is expected to bring up to 9mm of rainfall.

Forecast temperatures are a low of 15C in the morning before the mercury climbs to 20C by game time.

Cloudy conditions are expected with winds southeasterly 20km/h to 30km/h becoming light during the evening.

Brisbane

While rainy conditions are set to bring a drenching of up to 20mm on Friday, Saturday should only bring a shower or two.

BOM is forecasting a cloudy day with a medium chance of showers and up to 5mm of rain.

A low of 17C is forecast for 4am, with temperatures expected to rise throughout the morning to a top of 25C by 1pm.

Adelaide

Adelaide is set for a mostly sunny day, with a shower or two likely to hit in the evening.

After a cool start to the day with 12C at 6.30am, the temperature is expected to hit 25C by game time and a high of 26C at 3.30pm.

Temperatures will fall to 19C by 9.30pm.

Winds north to northeasterly 25km/h to 35km/h turning northwesterly 15km/h to 25km/h during the afternoon.

Perth

A partly cloudy day with a slight chance of a shower in the morning.

Perth can expect a cooler day than the start of the week, with a low of 9C forecast at 5am before climbing to 18C by first bounce.

Temperatures will drop to 13C by 8pm.

Light winds becoming southwesterly 15km/h to 20km/h during the afternoon then becoming light during the evening.

Hobart

A mostly sunny day with a low of 5C at 4am and a maxiumum of 21C at 4pm.

Expect about 20C by game time.

Winds northwesterly 15km/h to 20km/h turning northerly during the morning.

Canberra

A partly cloudy day with a slight chance of a shower.

Expect a cool start to the day with a low of 3C at 4am before climbing to 17C by game time.

Winds southeasterly 20km/h to 30km/h tending easterly during the day then becoming light during the evening.

Darwin

Another mostly sunny day with a slight chance of a shower.

A warm start to the day with a minimum of 26C at 3.30am, rising to 32C by game time and a high of 33C at 3.30pm.

Conditions are expected to stay warm throughout the evening.
