A mischievous cricket fan has been tackled to the ground by security for attempting to steal a stump at the Sheffield Shield final.

South Australia broke a 29-year Shield drought when Jason Sangha hit the winning runs to down Queensland by four wickets at Karen Rolton Oval on Saturday afternoon, sparking a scene of chaos at the ground.

Security were helpless as fans stormed the ground in celebration, mobbing Sangha and his batting partner Ben Manenti.

In the midst of the pandemonium, one fan thought he’d take the opportunity to grab himself a memento, pulling a stump from the ground and running off with it.

Vision from the match shows the fan dislodging a stump from the ground before running off and being immediately chased by a member of the ground staff in the background of a shot in which Sangha and Manenti are hugging in celebration.

The bearded, middle-aged man disappears from view as euphoric celebrations continue.

But in dramatic new vision obtained by 7NEWS, the man can be seen having the stump confiscated by security in an aggressive struggle, just outside the boundary fence.

One security guard forces the stump out of the man’s hand with one arm while keeping him in a headlock with the other.

He lets go of the would-be thief after giving the stump to a colleague, but continues to push and shove the man as bystanders tread carefully around him.

It was the one ugly moment on an otherwise historic day for South Australian cricket, who now hold the Sheffield Shield and domestic one-day titles.

Sydney-born Sangha, fittingly, entered SA sporting folklore by scoring the winning run, a year after being told by NSW he was no longer required.

“I thought my career was over,” the 25-year-old said.

“South Australia gave me a second chance. I owe them everything, really. They have saved my career.”

Sangha and Australian Test keeper Alex Carey’s match-defining 202-run partnership followed earlier heroics from SA paceman Brendan Doggett, who returned the best-ever match figures in a Shield final, 11-140.

Born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Doggett won two Shields with the Bulls and took the match-winning wicket with his last ball for the state in the 2021 final.

“I was probably a little bit naive with my first two,” Doggett said.

“Just being young and being in a really strong side, I probably didn’t realise how hard they were to win until arriving here.”
