Foal of Winx sells for eye-watering $10 million price tag
Australia’s greatest ever race mare, Winx, has had her first available foal sell for a record $10 million, doubling the highest previous Australian yearling sale record.
The yearling, a filly by champion youngster Pierro, was expected to near an eight-figure price target and was under security surveillance throughout her time at the Warwick Farm complex.
Ironically, however, the buyer was none other than Woppitt Bloodstock, which is managed by Winx’s Aussie part-owner Debbie Kepitis.

“I am privileged to secure this filly on behalf of my family… she’s Australian forever.”
Like her mother, the filly will be trained by legendary trainer Chris Waller.
“We call her Winny, a bit like Black Caviar being called Nelly, but she won’t race as that. A name is going to require more thought,” Kepitis said.
The highest priced yearling sold in Australia was previously $5 million for the half-brother to Black Caviar in 2013.
The previous Australian record for a yearling filly was $2.6 million, set a year earlier for that horse’s full-sister..
The world record for a yearling filly was $9 million, a price tag achieved in Europe in 2013.
For further perspective, the highest priced WA yearling of either sex sold is $625,000, which was set earlier this year and broke the 2007 record of $365,000.
Understandably, no reserve was placed on Winx’s daughter.
Hype built in recent days for the second day of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when American thoroughbred mogul John Stewart declared he’d go to $9 million for the filly.
Though beaten, Stewart claimed it was ‘mission accomplished’ and he’d done his duty in keeping the valued commodity on local pastures.
“I said before that my goal was for the filly to stay in Australia,” Stewart said on X.
“Congratulations to (Debbie) and everyone in Australia!
“The Winx filly is right where she belongs.
“I hope I played a small part in discouraging some of the international players out of the auction.”
Winx, who scored a record 25 G1 wins amidst a career that ended without having been beaten in her last 33 starts, was given time to have her second foal - this filly - after losing her first foal in 2020 to birthing complications.
Winx is currently in foal to esteemed sprinting sire Snitzel and is due in the second half of this year.
