Matildas superstar Sam Kerr and fiancee Kristie Mewis have touched down in Perth in a surprise visit to Kerr’s hometown.

The pair arrived in the State capital on Friday afternoon, luggage in hand after the long-haul flight.

The reason behind the visit remains unclear but it may just be a case of some much-needed rest and relaxation for the high-profile football duo, who have both had a less than ideal year.

Earlier in the week Mewis was sensationally dropped from the United States’ Olympic soccer team in a move that shocked fans.

The 33-year-old has played for the national team since 2013 but an ongoing injury earlier in the year saw her sidelined from club side West Ham United, ultimately leading to her being dropped from the US squad.

Mewis, who has been out with a knee injury since February, could be set to return to Perth in late August for the Perth International Football Cup, featuring West Ham, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Leicester City.

The pair’s trip to Perth marks the second time they have been here since December, with the couple spotted enjoying the sun in Fremantle around the new year during the Women’s Super League’s mid-season break.

It comes after Kerr was last month ruled out of the Olympics due to her own injury — a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in her knee sustained in January.

The first half of 2024 has been a shocker for the couple, following revelations in March that Kerr had been charged with allegedly racially harassing a police officer.

Her defence team was unable to have the charge thrown out over an alleged abuse of process and will now face a trial in February. She has pleaded not guilty.
