The Kookaburras midfielder banned for six months after being caught trying to buy drugs at the Paris Olympics has been handed a big payday to play overseas.

Tom Craig was one of 12 Australians picked up in the Indian Hockey League auction overnight.

He will play for Tamil Nadu Dragons in December on a deal worth $35,000.

The 28-year-old was spotted by French police buying cocaine from a man in Paris’ ninth district and was found in possession of one gram of the party drug.

He spent a night in the custody of French police after the Kookaburras were bundled out of the Olympics early.

Under the provisions of his ban, there are no restrictions on Craig playing overseas.

“During the suspension, Craig will be prohibited from playing in any match, competition, or event at any level sanctioned or organised by Hockey Australia, including the upcoming Hockey One League and FIH Pro League seasons,” Hockey Australia said when confirming Craig’s ban.

“Additionally, Craig is required to complete mandatory training and education programs as part of his sanction”.

West Australian star and national team captain Aran Zalewski landed the third-richest deal for any Australian. He will play for Kalinga Lancers for $47,000.

Zalewski has stepped away from this year’s Hockey One with Perth Thundersticks.

Tim Brand landed at Hyderabad Toofans for $49,000 and Jeremy Hayward — the most expensive Aussie — will play for Soorman Hockey Club for $74,000.

The tournament runs from December 28 to February 1.
