Australia’s close neighbour Vanuatu has been shaken by a large earthquake.

The 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the island nation about 5am local time on Monday, with an epicentre time of about 4pm (2am AEST).

The quake struck at a depth of 39km.

There is no current tsunami advisory from the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department in place.
