Iran’s foreign ministry has summoned the Australian ambassador in Tehran over what it said was his country’s biased stance on Iran’s attack against Israel, Iranian news agency Tasnim has reported.

Ian McConville was summoned on Sunday due to his country’s repeated bias, including on Iran’s response to what it called “the Zionist regime,” meaning Israel.

Iran’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Mr McConville was summoned as “the repetition of biased positions and contrary to the standards of international law of the Australian government regarding the recent developments in the region.”

In the meeting, the Iranian foreign ministry official, the director general Asia and the Pacific Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, protested Australia’s hypocritical approach to regional developments and emphasised the Islamic Republic of Iran’s “inherent right to legitimate defense”, Iran’s Mehr new agency reported.

The official also condemned the silence of the international community regarding Israel’s repeated aggressions against Gaza and Lebanon and warned the Australian government and the international community that their silence would embolden the Israeli’s.

Mehr news agency reported that the Australian ambassador explained the movements and actions of his government to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and announced that he will convey Iran’s official protest to his respective government.

Australia’s embassy in Tehran did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.

Tehran launched a missile attack against Israel on Tuesday in retaliation for the killing of several leaders of Iran-aligned armed groups. Israel has said it will respond.
