Insiders have told The Sun he had struggled with drug addiction and owed money to loan sharks in recent years.

The death came just weeks after Princess Beatrice — the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson — learnt her mother had been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Mr Liuzzo, the son of a plastic resin tycoon, had already had brushes with the law when he started dating Princess Beatrice in 2005, when she was 17.

Four years before the pair met Mr Liuzzo was charged with the manslaughter of a student in Massachusetts.

The charge was later downgraded to assault and battery with Liuzzo sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

He also later breached the conditions of his probation by leaving the US, causing him to get a further six months added to his three-year probation time. Princess Beatrice ended the relationship soon after.

Princess Beatrice is now married to Edoardo Malpelli Mozzi, right, and has a two-year-old daughter, Sienna, and is stepmother to her husband’s six-year-old son Christopher Woolf, left.

Mr Liuzzo was later quoted as being dismissive of the relationship, saying “I wasn’t sure I wanted to get in that deep with Bea. I loved her but I wasn’t in love with her.”

“Sometimes another lady friend of mine would come over to my place at Eaton Square in London. It was just messing around, never anything more, and I felt so bad afterwards because of Bea.

“I’m not a bad person. But it’s like putting heroin in front of Pete Doherty. Women are my weakness.”

Mr Liuzzo’s troubled life included several encounters with the law, including in Australia where he was arrested on the Gold Coast after crashing his Audi into traffic lights. He later pleaded guilty to driving offences and cocaine possession.
