“As the eldest son, he carried great meaning within our family and leaves behind many siblings who will forever feel his absence,” the family added.
“His passing has left our hearts broken and our family grieving a loss that words cannot fully express.”
A crime scene was established, then cleared by Saturday afternoon. Friends gathered Sunday at the Fitzroy site, comforting one another and laying flowers where the teenager was shot.
A GoFundMe page has been launched to cover funeral costs, allowing the family to lay their “precious boy to rest”.
“As a community, we believe in standing together during times of sorrow,” the statement said.
Detective Acting Inspector Brett Meadows told reporters an officer was working at a police station nearby when he heard two gunshots and rushed to the scene. He found the victim, described as a young man, suffering from a gunshot wound, who later died.
“When shots are fired from a moving vehicle it certainly appears to be targeted,” he added.
Police are appealing for information to help identify two people captured in CCTV footage, as well as another man seen next to the victim at the time of the attack.
