Corrective Services NSW has launched an investigation into 53-year-old Torrens’ death in a cell at Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre — a maximum-security correctional facility for male offenders.

“Despite the efforts of Corrective Services personnel and ambulance paramedics, the man could not be revived,” police said.

“The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious.”

Corrective Services NSW said the death in custody had been reported to the state coroner and would be subject to a public inquest.

“Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police investigate all deaths in custody regardless of the circumstances,” it said.

“Corrective Services NSW extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Audrey Griffin at this distressing time and also sends condolences to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by Mr Torrens’ death.”

Torrens was arrested and charged with murder on Monday, days after police released CCTV footage of a man they wished to speak with — almost a month after 19-year-old Griffin’s body was discovered in a creek bed near The Entrance Rd at Erina.

She had been on a night out with friends.

Mourners pay tribute to Audrey Griffin

Hundreds of mourners have packed a Central Coast beach to honour the life of Audrey Griffin in a sunset memorial ceremony.

Those close to the 19-year-old wore white for the sombre service in Terrigal, a coastal town about 80 minutes drive north of Sydney, on Thursday evening.

Many who had never met her also attended in a stand for change, saying women deserve to be safe.

Griffin is being remembered as a popular teenager who was happy, adventurous and driven.

She was gifted athlete, competing in a half ironman event in New Zealand just weeks before her death, and was planning to join the navy.

Mother’s pain over daughter’s killing

Griffin was found dead in Erina Creek near The Entrance Rd in Erina about 3.45pm on March 23. She was reported missing earlier that day when she did not return home from a night out with friends.

“It’s like you can’t breathe, it’s like you don’t want to breathe,” Griffin’s mother, Kathleen Kirby, told 7NEWS on Wednesday of her reaction to her daughter’s death.

“But I needed to find the strength because I wasn’t satisfied with what the outcome (of the early investigation) was, so I kept going.”

Griffin’s death was initially ruled a tragic accidental drowning but her mother’s “head and my gut were telling me different”.

Torrens was also charged with 11 domestic violence matters unrelated to the murder charge.

Torrens’ lawyer appeared on his behalf as his matter was heard at Sydney Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday. He did not apply for bail and the case was adjourned until next month, before he was found dead in his prison cell on Thursday.
