Australian helicopter pilot Thomas Frith dies in crash while fighting bush fires in Canada

An Australian helicopter pilot has died while fighting catastrophic wildfires in Canada’s Northwest Territories.

Thomas Frith was killed when the chopper he was flying crashed near Fort Good Hope Airport on June 28.

Great Slave Helicopters, the company for which Frith was flying, released a statement announcing his death with “profound sadness”.

“It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the loss of one of our own,” the company said.

“He was a beacon of light, beloved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Frith — an experienced pilot whose work included flying helicopters for the hit survivalist TV show, Alone — was killed while battling the devastating wildfires near Fort Good Hope.

The fires had forced the evacuation of thousands of people, and his colleagues called his involvement in the fire-fighting efforts “a testament to his unwavering courage and dedication”.

“As we navigate this time of sorrow, let us hold on to the memories of Tom — his smile, laughter, the love, and the countless ways he made our lives better,” they said.

“His legacy will live on in his beautiful young family and the hearts of all who knew him.

“Our heartfelt condolences to Tom’s wife, children, parents, brothers and all extended family.”

The Queensland man had been living in Yellowknife, Canada, with his wife and children for a number of years.

Tributes were posted online by friends and those who worked with Frith on season six of Alone US, for which Frith worked as a helicopter pilot.

“As I sit and cry for Tom, I remember he was very professional,” one person wrote

“This man brightened my day no matter how hard it was or how down I was feeling, never had a bond with a pilot like I had with Tom.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment.
