The man had checked in to the hotel on July 20 and was due to check out on Thursday.

He was reportedly wearing a black T-shirt and still holding his mobile phone.

According to local reports, there were no signs of a disturbance, no evidence of a break-in and no visible injuries suggesting foul play.

He was reportedly sporting a bandaged elbow and wrist, but his friends told police he sustained those injuries in a recent motorbike accident.

A forensic doctor was called and the body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital for post-mortem examination as police investigations continue.

The Australian consulate in Thailand has reportedly been informed about the incident. 7NEWS.com.au has contacted DFAT for comment.
