Police and paramedics rushing to the scene where they found a 10-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl, a 16-year-old girl, and a 47-year-old woman with stab wounds.

The children and their mother were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at a Jamieson Street address, before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

Later on Monday, Detective Superintendent Naomi Moore revealed the father called emergency services after waking to the sound of his children screaming.

It is understood that the 16-year-old, who is a paraplegic, had one stab would and a number of lacerations, the 13 year old had three stab wounds and the 10-year-old had two stab wounds.

Police said the mother sustained three self-inflicted stab wounds to get abdomen.

She is currently under police guard.

Detective Inspector Moore said the family home was not known to police, nor was there any police history of domestic violence. “We believe the father and the children were all in their rooms, and potentially all of them asleep when the mother has carried out this act,” she said.

“(They’re) a relatively normal family, and if I can say to you, this is probably completely unexpected,” she said.

“We take our response to domestic violence very, very seriously, and the first question I had this morning was ‘have we dealt with this family before? What have we done?’, and as sad as it is, we had never dealt with this family before.”

“It’s tragic, it’s sad, it’s certainly not something me and my staff want to wake up to on a Monday morning.”

She also revealed the mother’s behaviour was “a little bit erratic” in the lead up to the alleged stabbing, and it will be alleged she attempted to take her own life.

“It’s still very early stages and we haven’t had a chance to speak to her yet so we don’t know what her intent was, but we’re certainly taking it as a potential attempt (at murder suicide),” she said.

All three children are expected to make a full recovery physically.

A neighbour told the Daily Telegraph that he knew the family involved “quite well”, and described them as “a good Aussie family”.

“Always friendly, we’d go and ask them to look out for our place if we were going away, or we’d look out for theirs,” Mark said.

“We’d wave and say hi… at Christmas they were here exchanging chocolates either our kids.”

“Just a typical good Aussie family”.
