Parishoners from a Brisbane church are praying for the safe return of their pastor believed to have been washed away in floodwaters in northern New South Wales.

The search for a missing man swept away in floodwaters in the NSW Northern Rivers region at the weekend is continuing on Monday morning.

Brisbane pastor William Strickland, 53, was on his way home from a wedding rehearsal in Murwillumbah when he attempted to cross a flooded causeway about 9pm on Saturday.

Storms and heavy rains lashed the region over the weekend, with some areas receiving 100mm of rain in a matter of hours, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The much-loved pastor preaches out of his Cook Islands church in Annerley on Brisbane’s southside, and worried family-members have travelled to NSW to assist in the search.
