Police were deployed to the scene and later found and attempted to pull over the men who were driving down Bondi Rd at Bondi.

The men then stopped at Old South Head Rd at Bondi, and one of the men, aged 20, was arrested at the scene, while another man, aged 24, fled the scene as detectives chased him on foot.

The second man was later arrested in the backyard of a nearby home.

A witness told 7NEWS he saw two masked men running from police, one of whom was wearing a balaclava.

It’s understood the men were originally spotted near the Dover Heights home of John Ibrahim.

Detective Inspector Adam Solah said one of the men was tackled to the ground in a dramatic arrest.

“I would like to commend the officers involved who wrestled with both offenders knowing they were in possession of firearms,” he told reporters.

Solah said guns were found inside the men’s vehicle.

“Two firearms were seized from the car — a semi-automatic and a revolver,” he said.

When questioned about the men’s movements, Solah said police were still investigating what the men’s motives were, but they were not believed to be from the eastern suburbs.

“At this stage, the reason they were there will form a key part of our line of inquiry,” he said.

“There are a number of avenues that we are looking at.”

Police said it was believed to have been an isolated incident, and there was no further threat to the public.
