A Melbourne man’s family is demanding answers after a routine arrest ended with him in hospital on life support.

The family of a Melbourne man who is in a coma following his arrest by police is demanding answers as two of the officers involved are stood down.

Luke Briggs was involved in a physical altercation with police in the car park of a 7/11 in Hoppers Crossing in the early hours of July 15.

Police say the 35-year-old became aggressive after being questioned over a minor traffic matter and began wrestling with officers.

He was arrested but then became unresponsive not long after, spending 17 minutes without any oxygen.

Briggs was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition where he remains in a coma.

Photos of the tradie from his hospital bed show he suffered severe bruising in the altercation.

While police maintain Briggs was aggressive, his family says they were told a different story.

“They were told while he wasn’t perhaps compliant, that he wasn’t aggressive,” the family’s lawyer Jeremy King told 7NEWS.

“There are real questions to be answered in terms of this arrest, and how somebody ended up with those severe bruises on their body and in (the) ICU on life support.”

The two male police officers involved in the arrest were interviewed on Friday and suspended on Monday with pay.

The entire interaction was captured on body cameras and CCTV. King said he is yet to see either.

The police misconduct lawyer also said what happened to Briggs highlights the need for independent oversight.

“I think there are always concerns when police are investigating police,” King said.

“People should be rightly concerned if police are getting any special treatment in this case.”

In a statement, the Briggs family said: “We trust that a thorough and fair investigation will reveal the truth of what happened”.

They don’t believe the 35-year-old will survive his severe injuries and say they are now focusing on spending their final days with him.
