A 16-year-old corgi was abandoned on a high-rise balcony in Melbourne. After being surrendered to the lost dog's home, the corgi found a new loving family who are committed to providing him with the attention and support he needs.

A small dog that had spent its days and nights isolated on an apartment balcony is now destined for a life full of walks, pats and treats after finding his “happy place” with a new family.

The 16-month-old corgi named Harry was recently surrendered to a Melbourne City Council after a video of the pet pacing around its tiny and exposed outdoor living space in the CBD raised questions over dog welfare in apartments.

Close to 400 applications to adopt him poured in to the Lost Dogs’ Home from across Australia but in the end the little pooch, formerly called Trump, will not need to move cities.

Arron Palmier and his partner, together with their corgi called Maya, said they are “beyond excited” to welcome Harry into their lives.

“The whole thing for us is to make him a part of our family and we hope he feels the same way as well,” Palmier said.

Before being handed over to authorities, Harry had been living in “lonely conditions with minimal human contact”.

There was concern for his welfare when vision of Harry running in circles and peering inside the closed door was posted on social media.

The dogs’ home said that after “months of isolation”, Harry had entered care “frightened, confused, and unsure how to be a dog”.

His behavioural challenges will require ongoing attention, and the advocacy group was desperate to rehome him with someone prepared to work through those issues.

Palmier said “we’re ready to help him feel safe and loved”, and excited to see Harry enjoy a new life full of walks, pats and treats.

“We have got him heaps of toys, new beds and clothes. The first thing we might do is take him for a walk,” he said as he prepared to take the dog home.

The Lost Dogs’ Home spokesperson Mel McCarthy was excited to see Harry heading to a home “where he’ll be truly cherished”.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who applied — it means the world to know so many people cared,” McCarthy said.

“There are still lots of beautiful dogs here hoping for their own second chance, and we encourage everyone to consider adoption.”

The dogs’ home will continue to support Harry and his new owners through its behaviour program.
