The supermarket price wars have stepped up a notch with IGA announcing it will be dropping the prices of more than 3000 of its essentials products for the next three months.

IGA has discounted and locked the prices of several fridge and pantry staples including cheese, ice cream, chips, peanut butter, gravy, pasta sauce and butter.

A host of cleaning and hygiene products such as toothpaste, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper and deodorant have also been discounted, as well as baby products and pet food.

The move is in line with the supermarket’s Low Prices Every Day initiative and is a bid to try to make shopping more affordable for customers given the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

“We understand how important it is to provide Australian shoppers with as much great value as we can, which is why we have locked the prices on thousands of essential products for the next three months,” IGA spokesperson Estella Young said.

“From pantry staples and cleaning supplies, to pet food and more, our latest round of the Low Prices Every Day program will help keep the basket or trolley cost down for our shoppers.”

The announcement comes after Coles and Woolies went head-to-head over the prices of its home brand cheese blocks this week.

The 1kg blocks of Australian dairy cheese products from both supermarket giants will be $4.40 cheaper at the checkout for three months.

Coles home brand blocks of Colby cheese, tasty cheddar, and light tasty cheddar will be down from $13.90 to $9.50, while Woolworths home brand tasty cheese blocks will be identically reduced.

IGA’s price drop will last until October 29.
