The family of a Perth man stabbed to death while on holiday in Thailand this week have told of their heartbreak, saying the world has been left a “poorer place”.

Liam Michael Ross, 35, was fatally injured after being stabbed in the abdomen, leg, and arm in Krabi about 2am on Monday.

He was taken to Wattana Hospital, then to Krabi Hospital but died from his injuries a short time later.

In a statement on Friday, Mr Ross’ family said they were heartbroken over Liam’s death.

“We are heartbroken at the loss of our beautiful, gifted, much beloved Liam. The world is a poorer place for his passing. Thanks to family, friends and colleagues for their support,” his family said.

“We request that all family members be allowed to mourn Liam’s passing in private.”

Thai police said they were investigating the incident in the city of Krabi, which happened about 2am on Monday near the city’s Noppharat Thara Beach.

The suspect, Randall Owen Johnson, was arrested at the scene with police alleging he was under the influence of alcohol and had a folding knife.

Police allege a verbal fight escalated into a physical fight.

It is believed the two men were not known to each other and a disagreement at a restaurant could have led to the alleged stabbing.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said it was providing consular assistance to Mr Ross’ family.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” the spokesman said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further comment.”
