A man has died when his car hit a tree on a median island on a major highway in Perth overnight.

The 23-year-old’s Holden Statesman was spotted speeding as it headed east on Canning Hwy, Attadale about 4.40am Saturday, police said.

Officers travelling in the other direction conducted a U-turn to stop the car.

However, it lost control and crashed into a tree on the median island.

“The 23-year-old male driver of the Holden Statesman died from his injuries sustained at the scene,” police said.

Major Crash investigators are examining the crash site.
