“It would appear that the victim has been sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle and has been shot through the seat,” Gold Coast Detective Inspector Mark Mooney told reporters.
“We don’t know at this point in time whether she’ll survive or not.
“What exactly has gone on at the time the incident occurred, we’re not sure.”
Police say the home had been sold and the occupants were moving out. The woman is understood to have attended the property with a group of friends to assist with the move.
Mooney said the woman was waiting in the car as the move took longer than expected.
Several others had attended the property throughout the day, complicating the investigation, as a listing had been made on Facebook Marketplace to advertise free furniture for collection.
As many as 10 witnesses are assisting detectives including the victim’s partner.
“At this point in time, we don’t know who the shooter is,” Mooney said.
“We would suspect that they would know each other, but we’re open to all scenarios.”
The firearm involved in the incident is still yet to be found.
Police are investigating the incident as an unlawful shooting and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward — including a man who left the scene shortly after.
Anyone with information that could assist investigations, including any dashcam vision in the area at the time, or who attended the property to collect items is urged to contact police.
