The couple were only metres away from the boy when they noticed him preparing to step out in front of them and honked their horn.
He stood still as they raced out of their car, putting his hands up as driver Dulaj Silva picked him up and passed him to his partner Kushani Jayakodi.
The pair then called South Australian Police.
“He was just a small playful kid,” Silva said.
“He kept giving us kisses, he was showing cars and everything, waving hands.”
“He was about, like, two or three metres (away) when we hit he (brakes of) the car,” Jayakodi said.
“So, actually, it is very scary.”
Police and the couple stayed with the little boy, who could not tell them his name or age.
However, his parents eventually arrived to collect him.
The family home is nearby, and they thanked Silva and Jayakodi for saving him.
It is unclear exactly how the little boy came to be on the road, but his parents told 7NEWS he is “doing OK” after the incident.
