He was followed closely behind by Addisu Gobena, who finished at 2:06:16.

Meanwhile, three Australian women finished in the top 10 on Sunday.

Leanne Pompeani finished at 2:24:47 and said she set a personal best during the run.

It’s estimated that the event has attracted more than 35,000 runners.

Major roads in the CBD are expected to remain shut throughout the day, with runners and residents urged to check for live travel updates, and plan ahead.

Mass rallies

Meanwhile, as celebrations for the marathon runners begin, NSW police will deploy hundreds of officers throughout Sunday to control three big and controversial rallies in Sydney.

They have warned the city that they will move quickly to suppress any hint of violence.

The city will host a pro-Palestine rally, a protest from the Refugee Action Coalition and the anti-migration March for Australia rally.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna, addressing the media on Friday, said the police were “ready to go for any contingency that takes place on Sunday”.“I understand that some of the causes do have a lot of passion about it, it does have heightened emotions, and we have a lot of tolerance for that,” he said.

“What we don’t have tolerance for, is violence or criminal offending.
