Long delays have hit the Melbourne train network after a signal fault affected all services.

On Thursday, just before 5am, Metro Trains said the entire network had stopped due to “the loss of signalling control”.

This means all trains were stopped at platforms, with some services terminating.

The stoppage lasted for about 20 minutes, but while services have now resumed, there are long delays across the metropolitan network.

Trains may run less frequently, with peak-hour delays of between 15 and 30 minutes, according to Metro Trains.

Many commuters on social media thanked Metro Trains for helping them decide that they will work from home on Thursday.
