A Tasmanian man unintentionally frightened his wife this week, making her think something had gone terribly wrong when he phoned her at work to say he had news. But all her stress soon melted away when she heard they’d won $1 million.

The Derwent Park duo held one of the five division one winning entries in the TattsLotto draw on Saturday night and will take home a whopping $1,048,013.90, along with ticket holders in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

The man received the surprise of a lifetime when he went to check his ticket at Derwent Park Newsagency after a reminder from his wife.

“My wife had seen in the local newspaper that the Derwent Park Newsagency had sold a division one winning entry, but it was unregistered,” he said.

“She asked me if I had bought a ticket and if I had checked it. I had to find out, so I walked into the newsagency, which I’ve been visiting for multiple decades, and I said to the team member, ‘I supposed the win has been claimed?’.

“He then informed me that it hadn’t been claimed yet, there was a bit of hope!”

Once he scanned the ticket, he was told there was a major prize.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I called my wife straight away and I asked her, ‘When are you going to be home from work? I’ve got some news to tell you, but I can’t tell you until I get home’.

“She thought I had lost my job or something bad had happened! I gave her a mini heart attack.

“I told her the news once she got home and tears started to pour down her face. She was absolutely speechless.”

With more than $1 million about to land their way this coming month, the cheery man couldn’t wait to book his next holiday and enjoy life to the fullest.

“I don’t know how to feel — it’s a bit surreal, very surreal,” he laughed.

“I think there’s a bit of delayed shock.

“We would love to travel next year.”

Derwent Park Newsagency owners Glenn Commane and James Warburton said they both nearly fell over when they found out their outlet had sold a division one winning entry worth $1 million.

“What sensational news for our Tasmanian community! We saw the winning news on Sunday morning, and we immediately nearly passed out,” Commane said.

“Our last division one winning entry was a few years ago now and it’s great to know that luck has come our way.”

The winning numbers in Saturday’s TattsLotto draw were 22, 42, 39, 28, 5 and 21, while the supplementary numbers were 13 and 29.

And. there are more chances to win, with Thursday’s $12 million Powerball up for grabs.
