Police allege the 33-year-old Chinese national fled Australia on August 31, 2024, four days after the attack on the baby.

The AFP confirmed it is working jointly with Chinese authorities “on appropriate options to take this matter forward” and noted China has extraterritorial jurisdiction to prosecute its citizens for conduct which occurs outside China.

Between February 2 and 6, Queensland Police and the AFP supported a delegation of Chinese authorities who travelled to Brisbane in relation to the investigation.

“The AFP values the ongoing cooperation from Chinese authorities and their shared commitment to pursue all avenues for justice in light of the alleged offender’s location,” the statement said.

Luca has since undergone extensive and ongoing surgery as doctors work to treat the burns and manage the long-term impact of the trauma. His recovery has required multiple procedures and continued specialist care.

Throughout the ordeal, his family has remained focused on his rehabilitation while also calling for accountability.

The investigation remains ongoing, with his mother maintaining her plea for justice.
