Good Samaritans Jamie and Michael O’Brien desperately tried to stop the bleeding before driving the 47-year-old to a local hospital on the back of their ute.

“He just said, ‘I think I’m dying’, just kept saying that ‘I’m gonna die’,” Michael told 7NEWS.

“His breathing started getting heavier, he started losing colour - that’s when we decided to sit him down and got dad to open the tailgate on the back of the ute.”

Jamie said: “He just kept bleeding, waiting and waiting for an ambulance, it never came.. so I just said get in the car and go, take him straight to hospital.”

Evans - who works as a BHP machine operator - was then transported by road to Adelaide where he remains in a critical condition.

About an hour later, a 53-year-old local man was arrested without incident and charged with attempted murder.

He will appear in the Port Pirie Magistrates Court.

Detectives are also investigating whether a car fire nearby on Gadd Avenue is connected to the incident. The Holden sedan, which was set alight about 7.45pm, was not stolen and is being treated as suspicious.

Investigations are continuing and anyone with further information is asked to contact police.
