Disturbingly, the e-scooter rider did not stop to offer assistance but instead fled the scene at speed.
Passers-by attempted to help, some aiding the unconscious 81-year-old, with another chasing the e-scooter rider for several hundred meters before he was last seen heading west from the Swan Street Bridge.
Emergency services were called to the scene where paramedics assessed the 81-year-old woman before transferring her to a hospital with suspected spinal injuries.
Further tests have revealed luckily the elderly woman escaped spinal injuries; however, she sustained serious bruising and lacerations that required stitches.
Speaking at a police press conference on Tuesday, the son of the 81-year-old woman, Ken, broke down describing the incident and labelled the e-scooter as “a weapon.”
“He hit her with a weapon. A weapon is not just a gun or a knife. He hit her with a weapon. I just hope he feels ashamed,” he said.
Transit crime investigation unit detectives are now urgently appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the perpetrator.
Police have released CCTV footage of a man they wish to identify and speak to regarding the incident.
The image shows a man riding an e-scooter and is described by police as having very fair skin, a stocky build, of average height, with straight blonde or brown hair, and grey/blue eyes.
He was wearing distinctive thick-lensed glasses, which caused his eyes to appear magnified, and a red jacket made of shiny, waterproof material.
