A Sydney councillor has publicly identified herself as the alleged victim in a historical sexual assault case involving prominent Aboriginal leader Mick Mundine, revealing she has carried the allegations for four decades.

In an emotional Instagram post, Ms Weldon said she had decided to speak publicly in the hope of encouraging other survivors of abuse to come forward.

“I have carried this for 40 years. It is time to no longer carry it,” she wrote.

“I came forward for the children who are here now and to break the culture of silence that allows abuse to continue.

“To other survivors of abuse in its many forms, you are not alone.

“It is never too late to speak up and seek support.”

Strike Force Millersburg was established in December 2025 to investigate the alleged historical sexual assaults.Mundine, the longtime chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company, was arrested by Sex Crimes Squad detectives in Redfern about 7am on Thursday.

He was charged with sexual assault — assault and commit act of indecency, and sexual assault of a person under 16 years of age.

The charges relate to allegations involving Ms Weldon, who was 15 at the time of the alleged offences in Redfern in June 1986.

Mundine was taken to Newtown Police Station following his arrest, where he was formally charged after being questioned by detectives.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, October 14.

Ms Weldon made history in 2021 when she became the first Aboriginal councillor elected to the City of Sydney.

The independent councillor has advocated for greater representation of First Nations people, improved social housing and a more inclusive city.

Mundine has been a longstanding and influential figure in Sydney’s Aboriginal community, particularly through his work advocating for housing and development in Redfern.

As chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company, he has overseen major community housing initiatives, including the $70 million Pemulwuy Project, which was completed in 2023.

Mundine is also part of one of Australia’s best-known boxing families.

He is the brother of legendary Australian boxer Tony Mundine, who died in August, and the uncle of former world boxing champion Anthony Mundine.
