Adelaide radio star Ali Clarke has revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer live on air, choking back tears while speaking to listeners about the devastating diagnosis.

On Tuesday, Clarke, who co-hosts Max & Ali in the Morning with Max Burford on Mix 102.3 revealed she would take a break from the show to deal with her health battle.

“I know people listening right now will have lost people, or will have been going through it, or are maybe even going through this,” Clarke said.

“I mean, I think we all know someone by now who has had a battle with cancer.”

A defiant Clarke said doctors had caught the cancer “really, really early” which meant her prognosis was better than it might have been.

However, she told listeners she would undergo a mastectomy later this week.

“I am going to have a full mastectomy — which, if you’re playing at home — that means they’re taking one of my boobs,” she said.

“If I’m truly honest, it’s probably been that bit that’s been much more confronting than I ever thought it will be.”

Clarke encouraged listeners to share their own stories or advice, by calling into the network.

Clarke said she thought she was suffering from perimenopause, as she had been “really cranky” with her husband.

However, a mammogram revealed the devastating health news.

She went on to encourage other women to get regular checks.

“That’s what started this whole ball rolling (a mammogram) … I’m so freakin’ lucky.”
