A crash on a major highway has caused morning peak-hour chaos, closing both inbound and outbound lanes, with police now searching for a driver who fled the scene on foot.

Initial reports suggest a dark green Jeep collided with a grey Mercedes around 8.20am. on Monday on the Monash Freeway.

The incident occurred between High St and Warrigal Rd in Malvern East.

Drivers looked on in shock as they slowly passed the carnage of the crash that caused delays of over an hour.

A 24-year-old woman, the driver of the Mercedes, was assessed by paramedics at the scene and treated for minor injuries.

However, the driver of the Jeep was nowhere to be seen.

Police allege that a male driver fled the scene after the crash.

He is described as being Caucasian in appearance, wearing a white t-shirt, grey sweatpants, and carrying a backpack.

The Monash Freeway, which connects the southeast of Melbourne, is one of the city’s busiest roadways.

Three of four outbound lanes were closed for almost two hours, with traffic backed up nearly 6 km.

Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
