New analysis of jobs data reveals rate of Aussies working two jobs hits all-time high

The percentage of Australians working at least two jobs has hit an all-time high, new data has revealed.

Personal loan company Credit24 commissioned analysis of the official government jobs data, showing 6.9 per cent of working Australians hold more than one job – that rate held between 5 to 6 per cent from 1994 to 2019.

“Our analysis shows the fastest growth is coming from people well past their first job, workers a decade or more into their careers,” Credit24 analyst Lee Carney said.

“A second income at that stage of life often looks like a response to rising costs, though this data can’t tell us that for any individual household.”

While more people living in the regions traditionally work more than one job, the gap with city-dwellers has narrowed.

“That convergence could point to a more tech-enabled regional workforce, able to pick up the kind of second work that used to be a city-only option,” Mr Carney said.

The data shows most people working two jobs are doing part-time hours at both, but on average doing 39.3 hours a week, compared to 34.8 hours for someone with one job.

The trend of more people working multiple jobs is also still rising.

Across April, May and June this year, an additional 64,900 became multiple jobholders, the largest quarterly increase outside the pandemic reopening quarters of September 2020, December 2020 and December 2021.

The 6.9 per cent of every employed Australian working at least two jobs represents 1,049,100 people.

Women are 55 per cent of all multiple job holders, with 7.7 per cent of working women on the payroll at least two workplaces.
