A child is fighting for life after being attacked by a crocodile in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory on Saturday.

The nine-year-old was rushed to the Jabiru Community Health Centre, where they were treated by CareFlight’s specialist doctor and flight nurse.

They were then flown to the Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical but stable condition about 9pm, CareFlight told 7NEWS.com.au.

St John Ambulance said the child suffered “a number of puncture wounds”, according to the ABC.

Parks Australia confirmed the incident happened while swimming.

“The incident occurred in an area within Kakadu National Park that is not accessible to the general public,” a spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

The child was bitten near Jabiru, the main township of the national park.

Kakadu is home to about 10,000 crocodiles — 10 per cent of all the crocodiles in the Northern Territory, according to Parks Australia.

NT Health said it was attempting to get family consent to provide a condition update.
